An annotated bibliography for screen production researchers

When I started my PhD a couple of years ago, everyone told me that part of the task was to do a literature review and find out what other people had written about the field I was researching, which is the screen production process. I had a lot of trouble finding research, reflection, theorising of any kind that seemed closely connected to what I was doing.

Geuens, J-P. (2000). Film Production Theory.

Jean-Pierre Geuens has written one of very few books that attempt to relate the practical complexities and detail of the film production process to a significant body of contemporary cultural theory and film history.

Bell, D. (2006). Creative film and media practice as research: In pursuit of that obscure object of knowledge.

This article provides an excellent discussion of practice-based research in relation to the creative arts in general and screen production in particular. Bell discusses the history of screen production as a form of academic research, the epistemological problems encountered in attempts to legitimize this practice within the academic field and suggestions for addressing these problems.

Writing for the Screen: Beyond The Gospel Of Story

Given my research, which has a focus on improvisation and where I made a short feature without a script (just a three page outline), I found this article by Kathryn Millard very worthwhile.
