Tertiary media education is in a state of flux, with innovative educators moving beyond the screen via creative solutions to ensure that film, television and video production training maintain relevance in the convergent Digital World. An informed and optimistic approach is essential for quality production education outcomes and in preparing graduates to work in rapidly changing screen environments. The Australian Screen Production, Education and Research Association (ASPERA) is the peak discipline body of Australian tertiary institutions teaching and researching film, video, television and new media as screen based production practices. The ASPERA Conference is an annual forum for academics within the Australian screen production field to discuss shared issues and exchange ideas for the development of the discipline. We are currently calling for papers to address the changing needs of contemporary tertiary production students, as well as the wider aims of ASPERA.
Since its establishment in 2004, the ASPERA conference has given academics an opportunity to examine pedagogical approaches, student engagement, technological development and industry linkage, as well as research, regulation and archiving opportunities, within this growing field. Outcomes from previous ASPERA conferences include the development of the Australian Screen Production Research Index (ASPRI), which provides metrics for the evaluation and recognition of screen based research, as well as the current trial of an ASPERA peer-review system to allow effective benchmarking of practice based outcomes in film, television, video and new media production. ASPERA has strong and ongoing relationships with the screen industries, funding agencies, educational institutions, international film school affiliations and government (on both a state and federal level). Through establishing a national dialogue, ASPERA aims to sustain and strengthen educational rigour and industrial support across the discipline area. The 2009 ASPERA Conference aims to extend our scope by considering the complex digital environments screen educators are preparing today’s digital natives for employment within.
The 2009 ASPERA Conference will be held from July 8th-10th at the Hawke Centre, Adelaide, jointly presented by Flinders University and the University of South Australia. The organising committee welcomes proposals for papers, panels, presentations and other sessions on the above topics or any other themes related to ASPERA’s aims. The conference provides an opportunity to reflect on ASPERA’s progress as well as plan future directions to ensure that the Association maintains relevance for both the discipline area and industry.
The conference will be broadly organised into three sections:
- Teaching and learning in screen production courses
- Industry issues, including industry needs, graduate expectations and ways in which ASPERA can best support industry
- ASPERA issues, particularly continued recognition of practice based research and continued development of the discipline area
Beyond the Screen also hopes to focus on issues being raised by convergent technology, changing screen employment and digital networked environments. How do these changes alter our role as educators? How do we best meet the needs of digital natives in the classroom?
Abstracts of no more than 250 words and a 100 word biography are required by April 17th 2009. Authors will be advised of their acceptance and invited to submit original papers not previously published for peer-review. Publication of conference proceedings will be available via the ASPERA website.
Enquiries and submissions should be directed to:
