DeakinLive is an ambitious project which aims to bridge the gap between graduation and the broadcasting industry. It was developed out of the success of Deakin University hosting and supporting the production of the Marngrook Football Show from 2009 to 2019 from the Burwood Campus Broadcast Studio. This was broadcast live to air on SBS then NITV with up to 12 interns taking key roles in the production each season. It has also been developed from the success of the Deakin MotionCapture Lab’s providing a world class motion capture studio for Victoria’s animation, vfx and games industries.
The broadcast industry, and particularly sports broadcasting, has no systematic recruitment and training processes. The industry reports regular shortfalls of available trained professionals and an ageing workforce. Graduate pathways into broadcast industries are haphazard and random. Many graduates are turned off by this.
The viability of our programs is not dependent on our elite students. It is dependent on convincing a wide variety of capable students that we offer something of value to them. The broadcast industries accommodate this wider range of student capabilities and has historically been overlooked as a crucial partner in our success. Conversely,
the broadcast industries, like most of local Australian film and television production is resource poor. By provide teaching resources in ways that provide industry with resources it can use to make production possible that otherwise would not get made, Universities can cause industry collaborations that bridge the gap between graduation and employment gap. It also makes us more relevant to the industry.
