Presented at the Online symposium 17th June 2026
The Film Maker Studio brings together Film and TV students with guest screen professionals to create an interview-based TV series for the community broadcaster Channel 44. Each episode shines a light on a key creative’s career as they share filmmaking insights and personal stories. Guests include writers/directors Leela Varghese (I’m the Most Racist Person I Know) and Emma Hough-Hobbs (Leela and Emma co-wrote and co-directed Lesbian Space Princess), First Nations writer/director Lilla Berry (The Secret), and producer Julie Bryne (The Survival of Kindness), who share clips from their latest films and their screen development know-how. Adelaide University students set and sound design, film, host, edit and deliver the 4-part series. Set in the Magill Campus TV studio with mentorship from screen and technical staff, The Film Maker Studio provides a simulated professional environment. The authentic and immersive learning experience facilitates the development of soft skills in communication and project management, alongside progression in skills in multicam operating, directing, sound, and producing. Specific knowledge of broadcast delivery, such as adhering to title-safe and photosensitivity guidelines not covered in other courses, is included, and the TV studio skills acquired are transferable to any film and television production scenario.
